Indah Water denies pollution in Johor lake due to treatment plant

KUALA LUMPUR: Indah Water Consortium (IWK) Sdn Bhd has denied claims that the pollution at Taman Matahari Lake in Kulai, Johor, was caused by sewage discharge or effluent release from nearby sewage treatment plants.

In a statement, IWK said their operations team thoroughly investigated the sewage treatment plant adjacent to Taman Matahari Lake, the Inderapura Sewage Treatment Plant.

"The findings of our investigation indicate that the effluents discharged from the plant comply with the regulations set by the Department of Environment (DOE).

"Further examination has confirmed that the effluents released from the relevant plant do not flow into the reported contaminated area of the lake," the statement read.

IWK said Taman Matahari Lake consists of two distinct sections, with the effluents released from the IWK Sewage Treatment Plant directed to a separate part of the lake, different from the area reported to be contaminated.

"Following our extended investigation, we can confirm that no dead fish were found where IWK plant effluents are discharged."

It was reported on March 19 that schools of dead fish were found floating in the Taman Matahari Lake due to pollution from sewage.

The lake in Bandar Indahpura here recorded readings that indicated its water quality was polluted and possibly caused the fish to die.

Johor Health and Environment Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon had said investigations revealed that the pollution was caused by a damaged component in the sewage treatment plant's waste system that caused its discharged waste to flow into the lake.
