Fahmi: Cabinet calls for strict action over controversial socks issue

KUALA LUMPUR: The cabinet today unanimously agreed in calling for strict action to be taken over the issue surrounding the sale of socks bearing the word 'Allah'.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the cabinet also wanted an immediate solution to resolve the issue.

"Such an issue (the sale of socks bearing the word 'Allah') has created a perception of an insult to a religion and that it has touched on racial sensitivity," Fahmi, who is also the unity government's spokesman, said today.

He added that any statement related to legal action over the issue would be issued by the Attorney-General's Chambers.

His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia on Tuesday expressed his displeasure and sadness that socks with the word "Allah" were sold at a convenience store chain.

His Majesty reminded all segments of society to uphold national harmony and refrain from exploiting sensitive issues related to religion, ethnicity and royalty.

The following day, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim called for immediate action to be taken over the issue.

He said upon receiving reports, swift and decisive action must be taken to prevent any disrespect towards any religion, particularly Islam.

Police have completed their probe into the sale of socks bearing the word "Allah" involving KK Supermart and the sock's distributor, Xin Jiang Chang Sdn Bhd.

Federal Police Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said they were now waiting for a directive from the AGC on the next course of action.
