12 locations in Sibu picked for Earth Hour awareness

SIBU: Sibu is set to join the global initiative for climate change awareness by participating in Earth Hour on March 23, turning off lights at 12 significant locations, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

Sibu Municipal Council (MPS) chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh said key spots for the initiative included the Sibu Gateway, street lights along Jalan Kampung Nyabor, Taman Ling, Phase I of Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang, Sibu Central Market, Rajang Port Authority, the exterior of Wisma Sanyan, and the chairman's office at MPS.

Educational institutions such as Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS) and Kolej Laila Taib (KLT), alongside commercial entities like Farley and Sing Kwong Supermarkets, and the MPS Public Library, will also participate, dimming their lights for one hour in solidarity with the campaign.

MPS will join the event hosted by Miri City Council, with a live broadcast on the MPS chairman's Facebook page.

Ting called on the public to support the initiative by turning off non-essential lights, emphasising that MPS was the first in Sarawak to initiate the Earth Hour campaign in 2010.

This year's event will be inaugurated by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, showcasing a collective effort from various municipalities to combat climate change.
