Youths express disappointment over govt's withdrawal from 2026 Commonwealth Games [NSTTV]

KUALA LUMPUR: A number of Malaysian youths are disappointed with the decision of the Youth and Sports Ministry to withdraw from hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Malaysia, as it could have benefited Malaysia's tourism and economy.

The Youth and Sports Ministry yesterday announced that Malaysia had decided against hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

It left some Malaysian youths questioning the governments's decision and wasted opportunity.

Haziq Iqbal, 21, a polytechnic student, believes it's irrational for the government to decline to host the games, considering it's Malaysia's golden opportunity to attract foreign investment and boost the Malaysian economy.

"This is our only chance to attract foreign investors and elevate Malaysia's reputation. It's not logical for the government to reject hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games," he said.

Regarding the unused infrastructure, Haziq suggests that the government should take steps to fully utilise it instead of abandoning it.

"I believe the infrastructure is still usable. With regular maintenance by the government, Malaysia could potentially continue hosting the games," he said.

Similarly, Alea Aida Ruzana, 30, a working individual, was disappointed with the government for withdrawing from hosting the games.

"Feeling a bit disappointed because there are many advantages if the Commonwealth Games were hosted in Malaysia.

"This decision is somewhat detrimental because there are many things we could showcase to outsiders about Malaysia," she said.

Moreover, Muhammad Rohimi Ridzuan, 27, a working individual, shares the same sentiment on showing the beauty of Malaysia to foreign visitors.

"The Commonwealth Games should be hosted in Malaysia, we can increase the revenue and stimulate tourism.

"If the country is eligible to host the Commonwealth Games, then Malaysia should just go for it," he added.

Sisters Padma Ahbirami Munisvaran, 23, and Haripriya Munisvaran, 18, believe that the Commonwealth Games could potentially create more job opportunities for Malaysia.

"While the short-term costs might seem low, the long-term consequences could be detrimental to Malaysia if the government decides against hosting the games," said Padma.

"I think it's unnecessary to cancel it. Hosting the Commonwealth Games could enable Malaysia to enhance job opportunities and I think we would miss out on the benefits it could bring," Haripriya added.

It has been 26 years since Malaysia first played host to the Commonwealth Games in 1998, marking a significant milestone in the nation's sporting history.
