Fuad's death a big loss to padi farmers

ALOR STAR: Padi farmers have lost a staunch advocate following the death of Mohd Fuad Yaacob, 70, chairman of the Malaysian Padi Farmers Brotherhood Organisation (Pesawah) yesterday.

Muda Agriculture Development Authority (Mada) Farmer's Action Committee chairman Che Ani Mat Zain said Fuad championed the plight of padi farmers.

He said Fuad was a friend and ally in the struggle to protect the welfare of padi farmers.

"My deepest condolences to Fuad's family. His advocacy for the rights of padi farmers will be remembered," he said when contacted.

He said Fuad's death would encourage padi farmers to speak up about their challenges.

Consumers Association of Kedah (Cake) president Yusrizal Yusoff said Fuad's death was deeply felt as he was a strong voice in addressing the supply of local white rice.

"He was a vocal advocate for padi farmers."

Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu conveyed his condolences to Fuad's family.

"May his soul be showered with mercy and placed among those of faith and good deeds," he said.

Fuad died at 4.15pm yesterday.

His wife, Che Gayah Rejab, 61, said he died while waiting for his turn to see a doctor at a private clinic in Sungai Petani.
