Moscow concert hall attack: All Malaysians safe, says Foreign Ministry

KUALA LUMPUR: All registered Malaysians in Moscow are safe, confirms the Foreign Ministry.

In a statement today, the ministry said all registered Malaysian citizens and students in the city had been accounted for, following the terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall in Moscow, Russia, yesterday.

"The ministry, via the Malaysian Embassy in Moscow, has confirmed that all registered Malaysians and Malaysian students in Moscow have been accounted for and are safe.

"Malaysians and Malaysian students in Moscow are advised to stay updated on the latest developments and follow the latest updates and guidance provided by the local authorities."

The ministry also strongly condemned the attack, which killed at least 60 people and left more than 145 others injured.

It also reiterated Malaysia's stance against terrorism and violent extremism in all forms and manifestations.

"Malaysia expresses its deepest condolences to the government and people of the Russian Federation, in particular the bereaved families of the victims, and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured.

"Malaysia continues to underscore the urgent need for a concerted international effort to eliminate the scourge of terrorism in a comprehensive and effective manner," they added.

Comouflage-clad gunmen opened fire at concertgoers with automatic weapons on Friday, just before rock-group "Piknik" was set to perform to a full house at the 6,200-seat Crocus City Hall west of Moscow.

Russian social media channels close to the security services showed videos of at least two men walking into the hall.

Others showed bodies and groups of screaming people rushing towards exits.

The attack was claimed by Islamic State militants. This is Russia's deadliest attack since the 2004 Beslan school siege, when Islamist militants took more than 1,000 people, including hundreds of children, hostage.
