'Schools should display policemen's contact details to help those being bullied'

KUALA LUMPUR: Schools should display the contact details of policemen responsible for ensuring the safety of school premises.

This is to prevent bullying cases that may result in deaths, said a national education laureate.

Tan Sri Alimuddin Mohd Dom said this could help students defend themselves against bullying, besides instilling fear in bullies.

He said bullying should not happen in schools.

He said schools were places to acquire knowledge, build students' character and nurture future leaders.

"In addition to displaying the contact number of police officers, schools can also organise talks with the police or the Prisons Department, so students know that they are always being monitored."

He told this to 'Berita Harian' today.

Meanwhile, Alimuddin said the concept of safe schools should be reinforced by schools to ensure the environment and safety of students were protected.

In this way, he said, schools could detect students experiencing problems through changes in behaviour.

He said the role of parents should also be taken into account when involving the behaviour of their children.

He said students who wanted to bully others should be told that they could face legal action and could be imprisoned if found guilty.

Yesterday, a 17-year-old male student was found dead in a dormitory room of a vocational college, believed to have been beaten by his classmates.

Muhd Nazmie Aizat Muhd Narul Azwan was found unconscious by a warden at 6.50am.
