Don't exploit 'socks' controversy, says King

KUALA LUMPUR: Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia has called on all parties to stop exploiting the "Allah" socks issue.

"I have instructed that action be taken in accordance with the law, so there is no need for any party to continue fueling anger.

His Majesty said all parties should learn from the incident and strive to strengthen unity.

"Persistent anger brings no benefit. All parties, especially community leaders must act with maturity," His Majesty said in a Facebook post.

"Let us guide the people towards unity, not division. This is an opportunity to gain a better understanding of each other in our diverse society, so that such incidents do not recur.:

Earlier today, Federal Police Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain warned all parties to "stand down" on the socks issue.

On March 13, social media was abuzz after images showing a pair of socks bearing the word 'Allah' allegedly being sold at a KK Mart shop in Bandar Sunway.

KK Mart Group founder and executive chairman Datuk Seri Dr K.K. Chai, in an immediate response, issued a public apology.

The authorities have taken action, including seizing the socks and charging Chai and his wife, a director of KK Mart for "wounding religious feelings" over the incident. They have pleaded not guilty.
