Police detain bus driver in Kuala Ketil fatal crash

BALING: Police have arrested a 38-year-old bus driver involved in a fatal crash with a motorcyclist in Kuala Ketil yesterday evening.

Baling police chief Superintendent Shamsudin Mamat said the 8.19pm incident occurred at a traffic light T-junction in front of a fuel station.

"Upon reaching the traffic light, the bus that was travelling on the left lane tried to overtake a car when it crashed into a motorcyclist riding on the right lane as the victim was making a tight turn.

"The victim was thrown off his Honda motorcycle following the impact of the crash and landed in the opposite direction.

"He suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene," he said in a statement.

Shamsudin said the victim, identified as Ooi Su Ching, a 43-year-old backhoe driver from Kuala Ketil, was travelling home from his workplace in Kuala Bakong during the incident while the bus driver was transporting seven factory workers from Bayan Lepas back to Kuala Ketil.

The bus driver and his passengers however, escaped unhurt.

"The victim's remains have been sent to the Kulim Hospital Forensic Unit for a post-mortem examination.

"Following the incident, we have arrested the bus driver and we will present him to the Sungai Petani Magistrate's Court today (Friday) for a remand application," he said.

He said police had also carried out a urine test on the bus driver.

Police have classified the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 while the bus has been seized for further investigation.
