Land ownership issues complicate electrical grid expansion in Sarawak's interior

LAWAS: The extension of electrical grid connections to remote areas of Sarawak is facing challenges due to land ownership disputes, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan highlighted the difficulties in implementing the state's electrical infrastructure plans in Lawas and Limbang regions, primarily due to unresolved land rights issues.

During a breaking-of-fast event organised by Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) in Lawas, Amar Awang Tengah emphasised the necessity of a delicate and careful approach in resolving land ownership conflicts to facilitate cooperation among landowners, authorities, and contractors.

"Land ownership issues must be handled with caution to ensure smooth cooperation between landowners, authorities, and contractors," he said, addressing the complexities of implementing the state grid expansion project.

He further mentioned the importance of clear and legitimate land ownership for the seamless and effective execution of projects.

"We respect the rights of landowners and are prepared to discuss compensation.

"However, contractor obstruction has complicated project processes and implementations," he added, stressing the potential delays in socio-economic development due to these hindrances.

Amar Awang Tengah called upon community leaders to communicate the significance of resolving these issues to facilitate progress and amenities extension to rural areas.

He outlined the government's plans to connect Lawas and Limbang to the state electrical grid and extend coverage to all longhouses and villages, including remote areas like Ba'kelalan, to ensure no community is left behind.
