Sarawak allocates RM1.5 bil for rural education and health

KUCHING: The Sarawak government has allocated RM1.5 billion to fast-track rural development with an emphasis on the education and health sectors, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that the funds would be managed by rural development agencies like the Northern Region Development Agency. A significant portion of this allocation will be directed towards renovating and reconstructing dilapidated schools and clinics in rural regions.

During a Ramadan Iftar and Tarawih prayer event with the Royal Malaysia Police contingent in Sarawak, the Premier revealed that the state government would also finance federal projects in these sectors.

This agreement comes after discussions with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, where it was decided that Sarawak would initially fund these projects, to be reimbursed later by the federal government.

The Premier stressed the need for educational and medical facilities in Sarawak to match the state's high-income status as recognised by the World Bank. He disclosed that over 60 per cent of clinics and schools in Sarawak are in poor condition and do not meet the standards set by the Public Works Department.

Additionally, plans are underway to rebuild quarters for teachers and nurses to improve living conditions and support for these essential service providers.
