GET programme to continue with new rates, says Ministry

KUALA LUMPUR: The Green Electricity Tariff (GET) programme will be continued this year with a quota offer of 6,600 gigawatt hours (GWh) at a premium rate of 10 sen per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for low voltage users and 20 sen per kWh for medium and high-voltage users.

GET is a strategic initiative by the government that offers electricity supply generated from renewable energy (RE) to Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) customers who wish to reduce their carbon footprint.

The Energy Transition And Water Transformation Ministry said in a statement today since its introduction in 2021, the GET programme had supplied a cumulative 6,762 GWh of green electricity to 2,461 users in various categories and helped them fulfil environmental, social and governance (ESG) commitments.

"Following the encouraging response and international recognition, the ministry, together with the Energy Commission, has re-examined the operation and basic principles of subscription to maintain confidence of GET programme users.

"Given the required ESG commitments by corporate companies, the government has decided that subscribers of the GET programme this year will not be charged an Imbalance Cost Pass Through for the actual energy units consumed.

"The new GET for this year has been stipulated at a rate of 10 sen per kWh for residential users and low-voltage non-residential users (Tariff Trade B, Industry D, Mining H, Agriculture Spec F as well as G and G1 Street Lamps) and 20 sen per kWh for non-residential consumers using medium and high voltage (Trade tariffs C1, C2, C3 and C4, Industrial E1, E2 and E3, Mining H1 and H2 as well as Specific Agriculture F1 and F2) compared to the rate of 21.8 sen per kWh last year."

The ministry said the subscriptions could be made from May 3 through the myTNB portal and users were allowed to backdate the subscription, applicable from periods beginning Jan 1. The backdated subscription option is for subscriptions made from May 3 to May 31.

"The lock-in subscription period is until Dec 31 every year with automatic renewal for a one-year period if the subscription is not terminated.

"The income from this programme will be used to accelerate the country's energy transition efforts to increase RE capacity, such as the implementation of the Solar for Rakyat Scheme (SolaRIS) which was recently introduced."

More details on the programme can be found on the TNB website.
