Wet Aidilfitri in Kuantan welcomed after hot, dry spell

KUANTAN: Heavy rain lashed the state capital intermittently since early today providing some relief after a prolonged hot and dry spell.

The hot weather these past few weeks had triggered peat, bush and plantation fires at various locations with hazy smoke enveloping certain areas.

Yesterday, Pahang Fire and Rescue Department director Datuk Dr Wan Mohammad Zaidi Wan Isa was reported as saying two helicopters — a Mi-17 and Agusta — would today be deployed to douse fires in Gebeng here and Rompin.

Wildfires had also been reported at Sungai Ular, Taman Pandan Damai and Taman Indera Sempurna here on April 8 with ash from the blaze were being blown towards nearby housing areas.

Last month, the Meteorological Department said thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds were expected from March 29 until May.
