Army special forces training affected by diving pool construction delay

SIK: The delay in the construction of a diving pool at a military camp in Mersing is affecting training for officers and soldiers who are part of the army's elite, Grup Gerak Khas (GGK) unit.

Army Chief General Datuk Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan said he hoped the project could be completed soon to facilitate the special force's training needs.

He said the completion of the project has been delayed for 647 days, with just three per cent of the project left to be completed.

"The army is grateful to Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia's concern over the project," he said at a Hari Raya gathering in Kem Gubir here today.

Hafizuddeain said the army has been monitoring the issue and raised it at the monthly Malaysian Armed Forces development meeting.

Yesterday, Sultan Ibrahim, who is also the GGK Colonel Commandant called for those responsible for the project to explain the delay in its completion.

The diving pool was supposed to have been completed in December 2022.

Hafizuddeain said he hopes the Johor Public Works Department (JKR) can help complete the project.

He said on April 14, those responsible for the project requested a sixth extension to complete the construction of the diving pool.

"This is a project under the Defence Ministry's purview with JKR being the implementation agency.

"I am made to understand that a subcontractor was appointed but they too failed and withdrew from the project."
