Anwar, wife meet Malaysian family that escaped conflict-hit Gaza

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, met with activist Muhammad Nadir Al-Nuri and his family at the Seri Perdana Complex in Putrajaya near here yesterday.

In a posting made on his Facebook account, Anwar said they delved into the hardships faced by Nadir and his family, who had navigated their way out of the conflict-hit zone in Gaza before returning to Malaysia.

The prime minister expressed relief and gratitude as the family is now safe and sound.

"We (Anwar and Azizah) are delighted to see his wife and children in good condition after enduring arduous suffering in the Gaza Strip.

"We had a lengthy talk regarding the suffering of the Palestinian people, as well as Malaysia's stance (on the Palestine-Israel conflict), and the experiences of his family members leaving the conflict-hit zone before returning to Malaysia.

"Nadir shared a remarkable story, where his children were excited to see eggs and watermelons when they first arrived in Malaysia because they had been deprived of such basic food for months due to the worsening war situation there," he said in a Facebook post.

Nadir, who is Cinta Gaza Malay chief executive officer (CEO), stated in a post entitled "183 Long Days", uploaded on his Facebook and Instagram accounts, that Anwar played an important role in enabling his family to leave Gaza.

Nadir said he was contacted by the prime minister's political secretary, Farhan Fauzi, a day before Hari Raya Aidilfitri and was asked to go to a special location, along with Malaysian Consultative Council for Islamic Organisations (Mapim) CEO Ahmad Sani Abdul Alim Araby.

Meanwhile, during the visit, Anwar underscored Malaysia's dedication to supporting humanitarian efforts.

"I pray that Nadir and his family can continue their lives peacefully.

"God willing, I will continue to assist to the best of my ability in facilitating the process of delivering humanitarian aid from Malaysia to the Palestinian people."
