FoodUnites introduces traditional delights to young Sarawakians

KUCHING: The FoodUnites initiative, spearheaded by the Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Ministry, is bringing traditional ethnic food to the forefront among the youth, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

This was unveiled during the Unity Week celebrations, coinciding with the festive month of Syawal.

Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said the programme aimed to foster an appreciation of Sarawak's diverse culinary heritage among younger generations.

"FoodUnites showcases an array of ethnic foods through the 'Rumah Kami' exhibition, which is decorated to reflect the traditions of 11 ethnic groups including Malay, Iban, Chinese, Indian, Bidayuh, Melanau, Rara, Javanese, Buginese, Kedayan, and Orang Ulu," she said at the Aidilfitri Open House and FoodUnites Sarawak 2024 event held at the Penview Convention Centre in Kuching on Sunday.

The event highlighted 54 traditional dishes that represent the variety of cultures in Malaysia, making them accessible to people from all walks of life.

The minister emphasised that FoodUnites also plays a crucial role in fostering racial tolerance and strengthening community bonds through the open house celebrations and other related activities.

"This initiative is not only about celebrating our culinary heritage but also about preserving these traditional foods as symbols of unity in our country," Fatimah said.
