'Haram' to share videos, photos Lumut helicopter crash, says Kelantan mufti

KOTA BARU: Spreading videos and posting pictures of those who died in the navy helicopter crash in Lumut is 'haram' (forbidden) in Islam, said Kelantan Mufti Datuk Mohamad Shukri Mohamad today.

He said doing this not only humiliated the victims but could also hurt the feelings of their family members.

He said this should be stopped because it contradicted Islamic ethics.

"It is forbidden in Islam for us to share videos or pictures of those who died, especially in tragic incidents like the Lumut crash, even more so when the condition of the bodies is inappropriate.

"It will also traumatise the victims' family members."

He said this at the Hari Raya open house organised by the Kelantan Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (Maik) here.

Present were Maik president Tengku Tan Sri Mohamad Rizam Tengku Abdul Aziz and state Islamic Development, Dakwah, Information and Regional Relations Committee chairman Mohd Asri Mat Daud.

Shukri said that in Islam, respect for the dead should be the same as that given to them when they were alive.

"Even speaking unsightly things about those who have died is sinful."

Yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said he hoped there would be no speculation about yesterday's mid-air collision and crash involving the two helicopters.

Fadillah urged all parties to show respect to the families of the victims by refraining from sharing sensitive videos or images.

The 10 crew members on both helicopters died.
