Muda-PSM to stay out of KKB by-election

KUALA LUMPUR: Muda-PSM has decided against contesting in the upcoming Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.

Muda deputy president Amira Aisya Abd Aziz in a post on X said the decision was made after due deliberation by the parties' leadership after a series of discussions.

She said Muda-PSM wanted to "give the opportunity to other political parties to contest".

She said the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election was a people's referendum towards the government and opposition.

"Every vote on the polling day is as important as the ones casted during general election.

"For Muda, the biggest challenge is to ensure parties contesting (in elections) adhere to the ethics and election laws."

She said non-governmental organisations such as Bersih have also questioned the Selangor state government's move to organise the Raya Aidilfitri open house in Kuala Kubu Baharu which could be deemed in violation of the Election Offences Act 1954.

She said Muda-PSM would organise a campaign, named Kempen Rakyat, throughout the two-week campaign and take the opportunity to educate the public on the country's political situation and people's struggle.

She said it would focus on among others housing struggle among B40 income earners, cost of living that does match the payscale and public health issues.

The Election Commission (EC) has fixed May 11 for the by-election following the death of its three-term assemblyman Lee Kee Hiong.

The nomination of candidates for the by-election would be held tomorrow, while early voting is set for May 7.
