KOTA KINABALU: A total of 24 students from Sabah have been given a sponsorship of their education by Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas).

The education assistance, provided through Petronas' subsidiary Petronas Floating LNG, is a continuation of the national oil and gas company's powering knowledge programme.

"It is carried out in collaboration with the Sabah Education Department and Yayasan Sabah, which commenced in 2023.

"The programme aims to cultivate a sustainable pool of local talent to support Sabah's long-term manpower growth and development," Petronas said in a statement today.

The sponsorship awards were presented to the students at the Majlis Ramah Mesra Hari Raya Petronas Sabah here today.

The event was officiated by Sabah Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, accompanied by Petronas chairman Tan Sri Mohd Bakke Salleh.

Masidi also witnessed the donation of 250 desferal infusion pumps to Yayasan Kebajikan Sabah (YKS) by Petronas through its social-impact arm, Yayasan Petronas.

Such pumps are used in the treatment of patients with thalassaemia.

"The medical device contribution is part of Yayasan Petronas' Uplifting Lives programme carried out in collaboration with YKS and Sabah Health Department to ease the burden of thalassaemia patients.

"YKS will be lending the infusion pumps to thalassemia patients across the state, particularly those who cannot afford to purchase their own devices, to enable them to undergo desferal infusion at home," said the Petronas statement.

Present were Yayasan Petronas chief executive officer Shariah Nelly Francis and Petronas LNG Assets senior vice-president Abang Yusuf Abang Puteh.
