Teen with scoliosis seeks RM5,000 for spine brace replacement

KUALA LUMPUR: A teenager suffering from juvenile idiopathic scoliosis requires a new Boston brace for spine correction as her current one no longer fits.

Anne Chong Xiao Zie, 15, has worn a spine correction brace since she was 10 after her mother noticed an abnormal curvature of her back.

Chong never complained of back pain, but her mother's concern led them to a visit to the nearest hospital in Ipoh.

Following several doctor consultations, Chong was fitted with her first Boston brace, a corrective device for her spine, which she has worn diligently ever since.

However, Chong's growth has made her current brace ill-fitting, requiring a replacement.

Chong's mother, Bong Vivi, said they were seeking donations totalling RM5,000 to procure Anne's third brace.

Vivi said the doctor advised her daughter to continue wearing the brace until she is 18 years old or older, and to attend appointments every six months for check-ups.

Despite the discomfort and restrictions imposed by the brace, Chong perseveres by doing prescribed exercises to aid her spinal condition.

However, her desire to engage in more vigorous activities, like playing volleyball with friends, is hindered by medical advice against strenuous exercise.

"Currently, my daughter must do certain exercises to help with her spinal condition, although she would love to play volleyball with her friends.

"I hope my daughter won't need surgery after her brace is removed and she can lead a normal life like others her age," Vivi said in an interview.

Those who wish to help Chong can send cheques made payable to the Media Prima-NSTP Humanitarian Fund at the Group Corporate Communications Department, Media Prima Bhd, Level 5, Anjung Riong, Balai Berita, 31, Jalan Riong, 59100 Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, with the patient's name written on the back of the cheque.

People may also make donations to the Media Prima-NSTP Humanitarian Fund via Bank Muamalat (account number 1401 0008 8427) or Maybank (account number 5141 0532 3170).

Donations to the fund are tax-deductible.
