Dewan Negara president pays courtesy call on Azerbaijani president

KUALA LUMPUR: Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev received a courtesy call from Dewan Negara president Datuk Mutang Tagal in Baku on April 29 to discuss relations between the two nations.

Aliyev, in a statement, said Mutang's visit was significant in terms of expanding bilateral ties, including the development of interparliamentary cooperation.

It added that the visit created a good opportunity to discuss the prospects for bilateral relations.

"During the meeting, it was highlighted that throughout Azerbaijan's chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement, both countries worked together to strengthen the grouping.

"They also noted with satisfaction that Azerbaijan and Malaysia have close cooperation in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

"They noted that despite the geographical distance between the two countries, the strong political ties between Azerbaijan and Malaysia have created favourable opportunities for investment, trade and business cooperation.

"The meeting also covered potential areas of cooperation in the COP29 (climate change conference)."

The discussion touched on Malaysia's support for Azerbaijan on the international stage.

Aliyev acknowledged Malaysia's backing during Azerbaijan's territorial occupation and its subsequent liberation efforts and Malaysia's role in supporting Azerbaijan's sovereignty and territorial integrity, which he hailed as a historic achievement.

He discussed the destruction of religious and historical landmarks during the occupation of Azerbaijani territories by Armenia.

Mutang conveyed greetings from His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, to Aliyev, along with congratulations on his re-election.
