MACC chief coy about contract extension

PUTRAJAYA: Tan Sri Azam Baki has kept mum on the renewal of his contract as Malaysian Anti-Corruption chief commissioner, which ends this month.

"I do not want to speculate. I still have time until May 12, which is my birthday. Whoever wants to give me a birthday present, they can," he said in jest.

He said this to reporters after the launch of the National Anti-Corruption Strategy 2024-2028 by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim here today (May 7).

Azam was appointed to lead the anti-graft body in 2020, replacing Latheefa Koya. His contract was extended for one year last year.

Prior to becoming the chief commissioner, Azam had served as MACC's deputy chief commissioner (operations) for four years since 2016.

He had also held the positions of intelligence director and investigation division director.
