MCMC, Microsoft to sign MoU on upskilling on May 14

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with tech giant Microsoft on upskilling Malaysians next week.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said the MoU will be signed on May 14.

"It's (MoU) is a collaboration between MCMC and Microsoft," she said on the sidelines of the International Regulatory Conference 2024.

"We want to work with them on upskilling the workforce in terms of digital skills."

She said the government wanted to tap into Microsoft's resources to upskill Malaysians including where artificial intelligence (AI) was concerned.

Last week, Microsoft chairman and chief executive officer Satya Nadella said the company will invest RM10.5 billion over the next four years to support Malaysia's digital transformation.

Its investment includes building cloud and AI infrastructure in Malaysia as well as creating AI skilling opportunities for an additional 200,000 people in the country.

Via the investment, Microsoft also plans to strengthen partnership with the government to establish a national AI Centre of Excellence and enhance the nation's cybersecurity capabilities.
