#NSTviral: Roti canai is world's best bread- TasteAtlas rankings

KUALA LUMPUR: Roti canai, Malaysia's top breakfast choice, has earned global recognition as the world's best bread.

This is according to TasteAtlas, which released the rankings of the Top 50 "Best Breads in the World" on its X page on Sept 10.

TasteAtlas is an experiential travel guide for traditional food that collates authentic recipes, food critic reviews and research articles about popular ingredients and dishes.

Roti canai, a pan-fried flatbread that is popular in Malaysia, is made with flour, water and eggs. The dough is folded several times to create layers, resulting in a soft, fluffy texture on the inside and a crispy outer layer.

Pan de Bono came in second place. The Colombian cheese bread is made with masarepa, yuca flour, cheese and eggs. The gluten free bread is often eaten for breakfast or as a snack. It has a soft shell and a sticky crumb infused with a cheese flavour.

Butter garlic naan from India secured the third-place ranking. This flatbread is crafted from wheat flour, clarified butter and garlic. The dough must be kneaded smoothly and then heated on a flat skillet, giving it a delightful crispiness.

Popular Iranian wheat-based flatbread, nan-e barbari came in fourth place, followed by Ecuadorian cassava bread, pan de yuca, also from Colombia.

Other popular favourites on the list include the baguette from France, paratha from India and mantou from northern China.

Classified as Indonesia's bread, roti prata was ranked 12.
