#NSTviral: Crash involving lorry and stalls triggers debate over safety of roadside businesses

KUALA LUMPUR: A truck accidentally crashed into a row of stalls in AU2 Taman Keramat near Ulu Klang on Wednesday after the driver forgot to engage the handbrake.

The truck, which was parked in front of a petrol station, had suddenly reversed and slammed into two roadside stalls.

One of the beverage stalls is believed to have been completely destroyed in the incident.

A video of the incident has since made its way onto social media.

In the 47-second video, a man, purportedly the owner of one of the affected stalls, can be heard shouting at the truck driver.

"What are you (the driver) doing? Why didn't you pull the handbrake?" he yelled.

It is understood that no one was hurt in the incident. It is also learnt that the victims have lodged a police report.

Ampang Jaya traffic police, when contacted, said that at press time, the truck driver has yet to lodge a report.

Meanwhile, netizens highlighted potential risks faced by street vendors and the need for increased awareness of safety measures in public spaces.

"This (incident) is why the local authorities don't let vendors set up stalls on the roadside. There is a fear that things like this would happen," @madza1668 said on X.

"The vendor was just trying to put food on the table for his wife and children to eat. No need to point fingers at both parties," @zulnh said.

The comment, replied to by @Nabil stated: "We're not saying doing business is wrong, but when incidents like this happen on the roadside and there's no time to avoid, will you be able to meet your wife?"

"That's why authorities don't allow business on the roadside."
