#NSTviral: Johor woman chronicles run-in with S'porean neighbour over CNY fireworks

KUALA LUMPUR: A woman from Johor took to Facebook to share her experience of being confronted by her foreign neighbour for purportedly using firecrackers on Chinese New Year night.

Omiko Qiqi's now-viral post detailed an encounter with a disgruntled neighbour, believed to be from Singapore, regarding the loud noise generated by residents playing with firecrackers.

According to her, the incident unfolded when the foreign neighbour approached her family, expressing dissatisfaction with the noise of firecrackers being set off.

However, much to the surprise of Omiko and her family, they had yet to ignite any fireworks despite having boxes of them outside their home.

"Can you believe the nerve of this Singaporean neighbour? It's like we're having a New Year's Eve shootout!

"They're all riled up, complaining about their kid being unable to sleep.

But we haven't even lit a single firecracker yet! Are they mistaking us for some kind of sand cannon enthusiasts? Give me a break!

"I bet they've never experienced a real Malaysian New Year celebration,"she wrote.

During the confrontation, a man from Omiko's household calmly explained that they weren't responsible for the noise. He said it was another neighbour that was playing fireworks.

Despite the clarification, the Singaporean neighbour persisted in expressing concern about the disturbance.

Omiko said they were preparing for the festivities and did not intend to set off fireworks late at night.

After receiving criticism from other neighbours, the Singaporean neighbour eventually retreated.

Meanwhile, reactions from netizens varied, with some emphasising that festive celebrations in Malaysia often involve lively activities like firecrackers.

There was even a suggestion that relocating might be more suitable if the neighbour couldn't tolerate such traditions.

"Malaysia's Chinese New Year is like this... If you don't accept it, don't be here," said @"Joan Hiew.
