KUALA LUMPUR: Netizens have raised concerns about child safety after a video went viral showing a husband and wife realising they had left behind their four-year-old daughter in their car on Friday.
The incident occurred in a residential area in Selangor around 2pm.
Based on the information provided, they had left their daughter for 15 minutes in the vehicle. The girl apparently was safe and sound.
It is believed that the child fell asleep while accompanying her mother to drop off their other children for afternoon school sessions.
The incident was captured on their home's closed-circuit television (CCTV) before being shared by TikTok by user @farishal83 on Saturday.
Based on the 49-second clip, the child's father, accompanied by other family members, rushed to a Honda CRV sports utility vehicle (SUV) to retrieve the girl.
"Life events are never forgotten, but this time it serves as a lesson. The child fell asleep in the back of the car.
"(We) forgot to take her out, but fortunately, after 15 minutes, everything is fine," said the TikTok user in the video's caption.
Netizens were relieved that the child was safe, but the thread lead to discussion on child safety. Some parents also related some of their own similar experiences.
"Fifteen minutes inside the car is considered long under the scorching weather. Alhamdulillah she is safe. Sometimes it can be a dilemma to whether put a child seat at the front or back due to traumatising incidents like this," said TikTok user @ANNA.NAZRY.
"It just happened (to us) but at night. Went inside after coming home and asked the other children where was our youngest child.
"They said he was asleep upstairs. Soon after, the car's alarm went off which was weird. The youngest child had woken up and opened the car door from the inside," user @tianje said when sharing her experience.
Another user A'a said : "That's why I usally would open the car's rear door even though I know I have no things to take back there...it's just to check."
Two users even suggested that parents must put a big sticker on the front dashboard saying "Check if Your Child is in the Back Seat"
