Guan Eng's graft charge sparks heated debate at Penang assembly

GEORGE TOWN: The atmosphere at the state legislative assembly sitting today heated up considerably when the issue of Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng's graft trial took centrestage.

State opposition leader Datuk Jahara Hamid (Barisan Nasional - Teluk Air Tawar), when debating the motion of thanks to Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas for his opening speech, again reiterated for Lim to take leave pending the completion of his trial proper.

She said it was important for Lim to take leave as his reputation, integrity and good name were at stake after he claimed trial to two counts of corruption.

“Lim must be mindful that he is a civil servant, and as such, must act in the interest of the public.

“He must have a sense of responsibility and take leave so that he can clear his name,” she said.

This however riled up R.S.N. Rayer (DAP - Seri Delima) who asked Jahara to retract what she had uttered.

“This is a court case and it will subjudice.

“As a lawyer yourself, you should be aware of this,” he said, adding that Jahara was making an insinuation.

Jahara also questioned the different stands taken by Pakatan Harapan leaders on the matter.

“The Petaling Jaya Utara member of parliament, in his speech at the Parliament lobby on March 26, had called for Lim to take leave pending his graft charge.

“Even PKR's Adam Rosly took leave pending his investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

“Why is there a different set of rules for Lim? He must understand that his position is merely a 'borrowed' one to serve the people,” he added.

Rayer got up and interrupted several move times before a shouting match ensued between both sides when the matter continued to be discussed.

This prompted State Speaker Datuk Law Choo Kiang to call for calm repeatedly.

He also warned the lawmakers to behave themselves or risk being thrown out of the August house.
