DAP's 'will uphold Islam' remark an attempt to get Malay, Muslims' support: Pas

KUALA LUMPUR: A Pas leader has raised doubt over DAP's assurance to uphold the "real values and true teachings" of Islam and other religions, saying that the remark revealed the party's own desperation for support.

Pas deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said in saying it now, DAP appeared to be attempting to garner the Malay and Muslim community's support ahead of the 14th General Election (GE14).

“This is merely a political rhetoric. In reality, the people can see the truth behind it (the assurance).

“For Pas, religion is a serious matter and DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang should not make a joke out of it,” he said when contacted today.

Tuan Ibrahim was responding Lim's statement yesterday that DAP will uphold the “real values and true teachings” of Islam along with other religions including Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism or Sikhism, should the opposition win in the general election.

Lim said this in dismissing Umno information chief Tan Sri Annuar Musa's claim that PH would not be able to uphold and defend Islam due to DAP's domination in the coalition.

Tuan Ibrahim added that Lim should have known better because the Federal Constitution had already stated the position of Islam and other religions in the country.

“(And) looking back at how DAP was so clearly against Pas private member's bill (RUU355), despite it only applying to Muslims, how can Lim came out with such assurance now?

“The same goes with the recent beer festival incident.

"We (Pas) is not restricting the rights of non-Muslims, but to host the party so openly (and eventually making it a norm) is not right. Furthermore, many religions also forbid alcoholic consumption.”
