KUALA LUMPUR: Gerakan today hit out at the opposition for tussling Johor menteri besar’s post instead of solving the people’s problems ahead of the next general election.
Gerakan secretary-general Datuk Liang Teck Meng said Pakatan Harapan should formulate ways to deliver its programmes.
"They should be more realistic by settling the people's problems instead of politicking,” he told a press conference at the headquarters here.
It was previously reported that Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and PPBM secretary Dr Shahruddin Md Salleh were the favoured candidates to be the Johor menteri besar if the opposition won in the election.
It was rumoured that Parti Amanah Negara (PAN) deputy president Salahuddin Ayob and Johor PAN chief Aminolhuda Hassan had also been listed as the possible candidates for menteri besar’s seat.
Liang said such a drama by the opposition pact had dragged on for some time at the expense of its service to the people.
He said he was “not surprised that they are now taking their in-fighting to the state-level."
He said it could also be observed that the squabbles over the post of Pakatan Harapan's chairman had lasted over a year.
He said most of the Pakatan allies had “grudgingly” approved the appointment of PPBM chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the Pakatan chairman.
Liang said he felt that such an approval was meaningless but added that the opposition had the right to make its choice.
Meanwhile, Liang said 20 resolutions were expected to be passed at Gerakan’s national delegates conference scheduled for Nov 12.
He said the resolutions would cover social, economic, health and education issues which affected the people.
Prime Minister and Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Najib Razak is expected to open the conference.
On election seat allocation for Gerakan, Liang said the party had “positive” talks with senior BN component party leaders since last year.
