Dissident DAP lawmaker Teh to make final state assembly appearance today

GEORGE TOWN: All eyes will be on Tanjung Bungah’s assemblyman today as he makes his final appearance under the DAP flag at the State Assembly sitting.

Maverick lawmaker Teh Yee Cheu recently expressed his desire to quit the party once the assembly is dissolved.

In the assembly's current session, he has yet to debate the budget, and there are rumours that he has requested to be amongst the 'final few' to speak in the debate.

It is not known what topics he will address in the assembly.

However, it is likely that he will touch on the two major catastrophes which occurred in his constituency recently – a construction site landslide which claimed the lives of 11 workers; and a major sinkhole which appeared at a luxury semi-detached housing development.

Teh is known for not pulling his punches in his criticisms of the state government, especially on environmental issues.

For instance, he has maintained that the state government should be held responsible for the deadly landslide which occurred last month.

In a previous sitting, Teh participated in a motion to limit the Chief Minister’s tenure to two terms, but failed.

He also supported a motion tabled by Pulau Betong assemblyman Mohamad Farid Saad (Umno) that all reclamation projects for development in the state be subjected to prior public hearings.

It will be an interesting scene at the assembly today, with the media eagerly awaiting Teh’s speech.
