MELAKA: Melaka Umno has submitted its candidates list for the upcoming 14th General Election.
Melaka Umno liaison committee chief Datuk Seri Idris Haron said new faces comprise 30 per cent of the list.
Idris, who is also Melaka Chief Minister, said the fresh faces consist of professionals in various fields, community leaders, businessmen, scholars, politicians and religious personalities.
“I have submitted this list to the party head office. I am confident that the Umno leadership is analysing the strengths of the candidates we have selected.”
“We sent a list of candidates who are qualified, experienced, experts in their respective fields, and possess strengths within the party structure. There are also several servicemen who have a background in the field of religion,” he said after visiting the Urban Transformation Centre in Jalan Hang Tuah today.
Idris also commented on the alleged insults made by Pokok Sena Member of Parliament Datuk Mahfuz Omar’s against the Sultan of Pahang, Sultan Ahmad Shah.
Mahfuz had allegedly drew comparisons between the health of the sultan to that of 92-year-old Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Idris, who is a member of the Umno Supreme Council, said the act showed the insolence of opposition party leaders towards the royal institution.
He said Mahfuz should be ‘taught a lesson’ via the Sedition Act of 1948(Amendment 2017) as his remarks could spark division within the various races.
“I am uncertain if Mahfuz knew what he was saying because he is known to speak before thinking. He usually issues statements that do not make him look good.”
Mahfuz, in his defence, had in an Utusan Malaysia report today, claimed that he was praising the sultan.
