PBS leader says Sabahans want new seats to be contested

KOTA KINABALU: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) wants the 13 new state seats to be included in the 14th General Election as it is expected by the people of Sabah.

Acting president Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili said the party had been consistent in its view that the new seats should be contested.

“It is the expectation of the people and, therefore, we should go for it. At the moment, we are just waiting for endorsement (from Parliament),” he said at the launching of Sabah Power Supply Open Day here today.

The Kota Marudu member of parliament said the party was all geared up to win the new seats, and defend its 13 state and parliamentary seats.

“You can put us anywhere. We will work and deliver it. We can take on the opposition there.”

On whether PBS had decided to field party founder and president Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan in the polls, Maximus said it would be up to Pairin.

“For me, I’d like to move away from Kota Marudu, but I also have the responsibility to ensure that the seat is safe.

“I’m happy to move and serve my hometown (Tambunan),” he said.

Pairin had last year gave a “99 per cent” assurance that he would not contest the next election.

In GE13, Pairin, who formed and led PBS since 1985, retained his position as Keningau member of parliament and Tambunan assemblyman.
