(Updated) Najib reminds people not to be duped by opposition

TEMERLOH: Do not be easily influenced by the seditious remarks spread by the opposition as they would only raise seasonal issues, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today.

He said this could be seen in the 13th General Election, where the Lynas rare earth issue was hotly debated as the opposition claimed the plant is not safe and hazardous to the people safety.

"Despite the international atomic agency saying the plant is safe and will not affect the public safety but the opposition continued to create an issue.

“Now after five years after the election, the issue has become quiet,” he said.

“The Lynas issue was raised to dupe us during the general election. Same applies to the black out issue when counting votes in Bentong ... the ballot boxes were closed at 5pm and it was still bright when the counting process began” he said.

Najib said this in his speech at the fish harvesting and meet the people programme followed by “Jamuan Rakyat” at Kampung Paya Chempaka estate in Lanchang here today.

Present were Mentri Besar, Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob, Rural and Regional Development Minister

Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Deputy Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Abd Muttalib and Lanchang state assemblyman Datuk Seri Mohd Sharkar Shamsuddin.

The Prime Minister reminded the people not to be easily duped upon hearing folk tales (cerita karut marut) and instead urged them to verify and obtain accurate information.

“Even in Islam we have the “tabayyun” concept which advices us to verify certain news to ensure we are fair and to avoid slander.

“Do not get carried away with the opposition as when they do something it might be done to influence us,” he said.

Najib also said the government needs a strong mandate from the people so that its voice will be heard when raising matters with their foreign counterparts.

For example, he cited the boycott of oil palm by European union countries recently.

“We want to form a strong government so that when I meet the leaders from other countries for any assistance than we can have a better say.

“No one dared to boycott our oil palm as we have a strong government,” he said.
