Pakatan should not oppose re-delineation if it does not benefit BN: Ahmad Bashah

ALOR STAR: Pakatan Harapan should not object to the re-delineation of constituencies as carried out by the Election Commission (EC) if it feels that the exercise will not benefit Barisan Nasional (BN) in Kedah.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah said the pact should not be worried by the commission’s move to carry out the delineation process nationwide.

“If Pakatan feels that the process will not benefit us (BN) why are they protesting?

“There is nothing for them to worry (about) if it gives them the upper hand to gain more votes in the state,” he told reporters today.

Bashah was met after presenting appointment letters to 10 state Appeal Council Board members for the 2018-2021 session.

He was commenting on a statement made by state deputy Pakatan chairman Dr Azman Ismail, who was quoted by an online news portal that the re-delineation of constituencies will benefit Pakatan in Kedah.

He said the proposed re-delineation in Kedah would separate the voters based on race with intention to strengthen the support in Malay majority areas for BN.

However, Azman said it would only benefit Pakatan based on the support given to the pact by Malay voters in the northern states.

Bashah said Azman’s statement was a mere political gimmick as the opposition has been against the re-delineation since EC proposed it.

“If the exercise can help them to win more states in the general election, why are they against it in the parliament?

“We are not against it (re-delineation) and we also believe that the voters have already made up their mind who they will choose in the coming general election,” Bashah said.
