Trade Ministry warns traders against profiteering during GE14; stern action will be taken

PUTRAJAYA: The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry will take action against any parties which act unscrupulously, raising prices of goods during the 14th General Election (GE14).

Its minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin said the public who encounters such traders can lodge a complaint with the ministry.

“I would like to remind all that during the campaigning period; anyone found raising the price of products will face stern action.

“The ministry’s secretary-general has informed all officers that if there is anyone who tries to increase prices, we will not hesitate to arrest the culprits,” he told reporters at the Jualan Sentuhan Rakyat programme at Presint 2, here.

Present were Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor; Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa and Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority chairman Tan Sri Badruddin Amiruldin.

On Saturday, Hamzah said the ministry has set up a special taskforce comprising enforcement officers who will go undercover to monitor the price of goods nationwide to prevent any such incidences in the weeks leading up to GE14.

On the programme, Tengku Adnan said the Jualan Sentuhan Rakyat was held for the first time in the constituency today.

“We already have our own programmes such as the sale of fish and chicken at affordable price, as well as free rice and biscuits distributed to Putrajaya folks,” he said, adding that due to the high demand from civil servants here, the programme was organised.
