Gerakan: Penangites should vote for people-oriented government, not business-oriented

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Gerakan has appealed to the people to gauge whether the opposition pact ruled government is business-oriented or people-oriented over the past 10 years.

Vice-chairman Oh Tong Keong said the proposed Penang South Reclamation (PSR) project was a vested interest for a business consortium as the state government had allegedly swapped land for the RM27 billion Penang Transport Master Plan but had not mentioned the land use of the three man-made islands in PSR.

“We are skeptical that these three reclamation islands will eventually become the lands for the consortium to develop luxury housing projects. Is the Penang Government selling the interest of Penangites?” he asked.

He said reclamation was not new in Penang as the previous Barisan Nasional (BN)-ruled government had reclaimed the 25-hectare Macallum in 1976 to build flats for the people’s interest, including the People’s Housing Project (PPR) and highways.

However, Oh said Penangites must defend the environment and reject the collusive agenda by voting for BN in the 14th General Election as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had promised to cancel the PSR project if BN wrested back Penang. - Bernama
