67 straights fights, 474 three-way battles in GE14 [NSTTV]

PUTRAJAYA: The 14th General Election will feature 67 straight fights involving 29 parliamentary seats and 38 state seats.

The total, however, does not involve Sabah, whose numbers have yet to be determined, says Election Commission chairman, Tan Sri Mohd Hashim Abdullah.

He said three-cornered fights involve 474 seats, with 143 involving parliamentary and 331 state seats.

Four-way fights will take place in 76 seats, in 22 parliament seats and 54 state seats while five-cornered battles will occur in three parliament seats and 18 state seats.

Three state seats will also involve crowded six-cornered fights.

As for the gender breakdown, there are 1,774 male candidates contesting 530 parliamentary seats and 1,224 state seats. Women make up 210 of the candidates in 60 parliamentary and 150 state seats.

The oldest candidate in GE14 is 92-years-old for the parliamentary seat, while the oldest state seat candidate is 78-years-old. The youngest candidate for parliamentary seats is 22-years-old, and 23 for state seats.

Mohd Hashim said the campaign period has effectively begun and will end on 11.59am on May 8.

“The EC has established 445 election campaign teams in 222 parliamentary seats and 505 state seats to monitor campaign activities,” he said.

The EC has also appointed 1,236 election observers from 14 non-governmental organisations to monitor the election process.

He said the EC is also anticipating an 85 per cent voter turnout, with the full results expected to be announced at 9pm the same night.
