Zahid to go for Umno's No. 1 post

PETALING JAYA: Former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will be running for Umno presidency in the party polls sheduled to be held this year.

Utusan Online reported that Zahid had submitted his nomination form at the party headquarters in PWTC on Friday.

Zahid is currently the party's vice-president, who is tasked with presidential duties following former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's resignation from the post late last month.

Zahid is among the party big wigs running for top Umno posts, following calls for all positions to be made open for contests and change in leadership since Barisan Nasional's devastating defeat in the 14th general election.

Among other notable contestants in the party polls include former Negri Sembilan menteri besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, who is running for the deputy president's post and Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin who is eyeing for one of the vice-president seats.
