Former S'wak BN parties pledge support to Pakatan Harapan, says Dr M

TOKYO: Pakatan Harapan (PH) now has stronger support in Parliament following the decision by Sarawak Barisan Nasional’s component parties to pull out of the former ruling coalition, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said.

The component parties — PBB, SUPP, PRS and PDP — are forming a new coalition of Sarawak-based parties, known as Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).

“They are not members of Pakatan Harapan but they have pledged their support to the PH government, so now actually we have a very strong support in Parliament, not only by PH MPs,” Dr Mahathir said.

Speaking to Malaysian media here today, the prime minister and PH chairman said even Terengganu has pledged their support for the PH federal government.

Sarawak Chief Minister and PBB president Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg announced the decision after chairing a meeting of the four party leaders today.

He said GPS was not joining Pakatan Harapan but would "cooperate and collaborate" with the Federal Government for the national interest and state rights based on the Federal Constitution and the Federation of Malaysia.

Meanwhile, asked if the PH government would present new laws that will need Federal Constitution amendments now that it has strong support in Parliament, Dr Mahathir said: “If there is a need, we will consider.”
