'Umno Youth must change to remain relevant'

KUANTAN: Umno leaders and members especially those from the Youth wing should look into implementing changes to ensure the party remains relevant.

Pahang Umno Youth chief Mohd Shahar Abdullah said many of the existing programmes could be further improved and there has to be strategies to get close to the people.

“Since 2015, the Pahang Umno Youth movement has been involved in various programmes on the ground as we try to forge a close and strong relationship with the community. We cannot remain in our comfort zones anymore as Umno has lost its power after some 60 years.

“The biggest challenge now is to win the peoples’ hearts and special focus has to be given to youths who seem to be less interested with the current political scenario,” he said in his speech during the Pahang Umno Youth Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house event at Wisma Belia Indera Mahkota last night.

He said Umno Youth leaders and members should accept the reality and not blame others for the Barisan Nasional defeat in the 14th General Election (GE14).

“We need to move on and forget about the defeat in GE14...we lost not because we did not work hard but because the people (voters) especially the younger generation no longer has confidence in us and disliked the mistakes we committed in the past.

“So we should not blame anyone but identify our mistake and find solutions. Spend more time with the youths and listen to what they have to say. We must continue championing the young people including ensuring they have their own homes, jobs and enjoy an affordable cost of living. Umno Youth has to be prepared with our new roles as an effective and vocal opposition to ensure the current government walks the talk,” he said.

At the event, Shahar also announced that Pahang Umno Youth had nominated Temerloh Umno division Youth chief Azril Rizal Sarit and Indera Mahkota Umno division Youth chief Muhammad Faiz Hashim to contest for the Umno Youth executive council in the upcoming party elections.
