Sg Kandis election: Pas supporters will still vote for me, claims Zawawi

KLANG: PKR’s candidate for the Sungai Kandis by-election, Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni, believes that Pas supporters will still vote for him, despite being instructed to vote for Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Lokman Noor Adam.

This, he said, was based on feedback received during his meetings with Pas grassroots while campaigning.

Zawawi said he is confident of securing 50 per cent of Pas votes, and noted that more than 7,000 people voted for Pas in the state seat battle during the 14th General Election.

“Pas members will vote for me despite the directive from their party leadership to vote for the opposition party.

“We are targeting 50 per cent or at least 3,000 voters who supported Pas in GE14, to vote for PKR this time around.

“In a democracy, even party members have the choice of picking candidates whom they deem fit to represent their interests,” Zawawi told a press conference on Sunday.

Zawawi dismissed the Pas leadership’s advice for its supporters to vote for BN, saying that it won’t have any effect on his campaign.

“In my meetings with them (Pas voters), they did not even raise matters linked to national issues.

“The voters here understand that we need to look into local problems such as flash floods,” he said.

On the issue of two PKR leaders who quit their posts with the Selangor PKR Youth recently, Zawawi said the incident has not made any dents on his campaign campaign machinery.

“Those are isolated incidents. In this by-election, we are moving on PH’s platform. We get help from Parti Amanah Negara, DAP and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia.

“They come here to campaign, conduct ceramah and ensure that every voter is accounted for. The resignations will not affect our campaign.”
