Don't blame other parties over fall in Malay support, Khairy tells govt

KUALA LUMPUR: It is not the fault of any political party that the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government is losing support among Malay Bumiputeras, says Rembau member of parliament Khairy Jamaluddin.

He said there was no doubt that the Malays were feeling anxious over some of the decisions made by the current administration.

“We must handle this situation carefully because it can impact racial harmony and unity,” he said at the launch of online business platform Buah Tangan, here, today.

“The anxiety among the people is real. We do not want to be the batu api (inciter). We want to help the government fulfil its aspirations.”

Khairy was commenting on surveys carried out by the Merdeka Centre, which showed that concerns about racial and religious rights had risen from 12 per cent in April, before the 14th General Election (GE14), to 20 per cent this month.

He said Umno was not to blame for this development.

The former youth and sports minister voiced his support for the motion tabled by Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng recently for the Auditor-General and Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to reopen an investigation into the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) issue.

He said Umno and Barisan Nasional did not want to be burdened with the bangkai hidup (live carcass) any more.

“It is good that they are reopening the investigation. They have my full support. We want to know the truth,” said Khairy.

“As a former cabinet minister, I feel we need to know the truth because we were not told some of the things about it (1MDB).

“We want to be free from this burden and people will discover the truth.”

On the question of the government fulfilling its GE14 manifesto pledges within its first 100 days in office, Khairy said Umno was willing to help the administration keep them.

“The people do not care about the promises made by PH. What they want is for the former prime minister (Datuk Seri Najib Razak) to step down.

“But, we will keep on reminding them to fulfill what they have promised,” he said, adding that Umno would carry out its responsibilities in the opposition.
