Mah says still lawful president of Gerakan until party polls

ALOR STAR: Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong today stressed that he is still the lawful president of Gerakan until the party holds its elections on Nov 17.

Mah said that he had handed in his resignation in May after Gerakan’s dismal performance in the 14th general election but the party’s Central Committee rejected it and furthermore the deputy president Dr Cheah Soon Hai did not want to take over as acting president.

“He (Dr Cheah) said that the two of us should be the caretakers of things until the party elections...I am caretaker, still president of the party until the next party elections on Nov 17,” he told reporters after opening Kedah Gerakan’s annual convention here today.

Mah was clarifying media reports which said that he had officially announced that he was resigning as Gerakan president after opening Negeri Sembilan Gerakan’s annual convention on Sept 16.

He added that the media had misinterpreted what he had said, which was that he would not be offering himself for re-election.

The convention also saw M. Marimuthu Selvan returned unopposed as the new Kedah Gerakan chairman, succeeding Dr Cheah.– BERNAMA
