Election fiasco: PKR sacks two members

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR sacked two of its members with immediate effect from Merbok, Kedah and Seberang Jaya, Penang, for being involved in a brawl, during the party's election last Saturday.

The party's president-elect Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said there were evidence to show the involvement of the two members in the fight, with "one member using a weapon".

Speaking to reporters at a press conference at PKR headquarters, here, he added the party would not tolerate and protect members who misbehaved and broke the rules.

A total of 14 people were arrested for their suspected involvement in a brawl which occurred during the PKR elections at the party’s Merbok branch last weekend.

Following what happened, Anwar said voting in Kedah has been postponed, while the Penang results have been accepted after an audit was done by the party's election committee.

Polling in Perak and Perlis have also been postponed, he said, adding it would be held before the party's congress in November.

He said polling in Negri Sembilan and Melaka would take place on the same day as Johor, which would be on Sept 30.

Asked to comment on Barisan Nasional's (BN) decision to boycott the Port Dickson by-election, Anwar said, "Actually, they shouldn't have boycotted. That is part of democracy, but I will continue to work hard and campaign even if it is going to be against independent candidates."

On the allegation that a minister's political secretary had misused misused his position to gain support in the on-going PKR polls, Anwar said, "I watched the video...it is quite disturbing. Tomorrow, I will be meeting the Works Minister, Baru Bian to discuss on this matter."

At the moment, he added the final decision on the allegation against the political secretary should be left to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to decide.
