Wait for decision tomorrow, Pas' Ahmad Yakob on PD by-election

KOTA BARU: Pas has urged all parties, including its own members, to stop speculating whether the party will contest in the upcoming Port Dickson by-election.

Its deputy spiritual leader and Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob said everyone should wait for the decision to be made by the Islamic party's top leadership soon.

“Let's just wait for the party’s leaders to come out with the decision as early as tomorrow.

“Therefore, it is not nice to make wild speculations about Pas' next move (for PD by-election). Better we just wait for a decision on the matter,” he told reporters after chairing state exco meeting here today.

Asked on the possibility of independent candidate contesting in the by-election, Ahmad said he believed other political parties would also contest in the by-election.

“They (contesting candidates) will take part because they don't want others to win easily.

“This is normal during by-elections held in the country. (But) Pas will adhere to whatever decision made by the leadership,” he said.

It was reported today that the decision whether Pas would throw its hat into the ring for Port Dickson by-election, would only be known tomorrow, two days before nomination.

Party leaders told the New Straits Times Press that they would meet to discuss the matter before making any decision.

Party deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the party would call for a meeting "in a day or two" to decide whether to contest in the by-election.

On another note, Ahmad said the Kelantan government has no issues with controversial preacher Dr Zakir Naik appearing in the state.

“The issue of him having tendencies of making racial and insensitive statements do not arise here,"

“So, it is up to the public whether to accept his statements.” he said.
