Government to focus on workers' welfare

PORT DICKSON: Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail spent about an hour today listening to views and suggestions from two workers’ unions at an event held here.

She said the government was seriously looking at the issues raised by Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) and Maintenance and Management Services of the Peninsular Malaysia Union.

She said among the issues raised were minimum wage, huge numbers of foreign workers, and housing.

These would be the main agenda of the new Malaysian government.

“As for the foreign workers issue, we acknowledge that many employers choose foreign workers as the salaries paid to them are lower, which allow them to gain more profits.

“This is what we are going to look at so that the decision made will benefit both employers and workers,” she told reporters after the event attended by about 50 union representatives here today.

Present were MTUC deputy president Jaafar Majid and Maintenance and Management Services of the Peninsular Malaysia Union secretary Kamarul Baharin Mansor.
