PKR Women wing wants a female candidate for Rantau by election

SHAH ALAM: A female candidate is needed to contest in the upcoming Rantau by-election in view of the Adat Pepatih tradition which upholds women’s rights in Negri Sembilan.

PKR vice-chief Sangheeta Jayakumar said fielding a female candidate was also necessary to increase women participation in the Negeri Sembilan state assembly (DUN).

"PKR Women wing will suggest the names of qualified candidates for Rantau by election.

"It is our responsibility to promote women’s participation in politics," she said in a statement yesterday.

Sangheeta said having a female candidate was also in line with the PKR policy to have 30 per cent women as policy-makers.

Yesterday former PKR Wanita chief Zuraida Kamaruddin, said the party wanted a woman to be nominated for Rantau by-election.

Zuraida said she already had two names who are qualified as candidates.

The Election Court in Seremban yesterday declared Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan's victory for the Rantau state seat in GE14 as null and void.

Mohamad won the state seat unopposed on April 28 after PKR candidate Dr S. Streram was refused entry into the nomination centre because he did not have a pass issued by the Election Commission (EC).
