'It will be unfair to me': Dr Streram

SEREMBAN: Dr S. Streram is unperturbed by calls made by PKR Women’s wing who demanded for a woman candidate to be fielded in the upcoming Rantau by-election.

The party’s former Women’s wing chief Zuraida Kamaruddin was reported as saying she would propose the names of two Negri Sembilan-born women as nominees to contest in the by-election, as no female candidate was fielded in the state during the 14th general election (GE14).

When contacted by NSTP, Dr Streram said the matter would only be decided by the party’s central leadership.

“She (Zuraida) can say anything she wants. But at the end of the day, the candidate will be determined by party president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim,” he said.

Dr Streram, 63, said it would be unfair to him if his name was dropped from contesting in Rantau by-election.

“I have been serving and working for the Rantau people for the past several years. I had also taken all the trouble to file the petition and went through a lot to make sure that justice could be served.

“It is not fair to me if I am not nominated to contest,” he said.

Dr Streram said judging from the support indicated by Anwar, he said he was confident that he would make a comeback to Rantau to contest in the by-election.

“Negri Sembilan Menteri Besar, Aminuddin Harun too has expressed his support towards me. I believe, I will be able to bring victory to the party for Rantau by-election,” he said.

On Nov 16, the Special Election Court ruled that the unopposed election of Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan as Rantau assemblyman in the GE14 in May was null and void and ordered the Election Commission (EC) to hold a fresh election.

Streram had filed a petition which named Mohamad as the first respondent, EC returning officer Amino Agus as the second respondent and the commission itself as the third respondent after he claimed that Amino had denied him entry to the nomination hall because he did not have an EC candidate’s pass.
