Umno in tatters and need to restore its honour, says Ahmad Said

KUALA TERENGGANU: Newly-appointed Terengganu Umno state liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Said aims to restore UMNO’s dignity that has been in tatters following its defeat at the last general election.

"I am sad looking at Umno now, which continues to be ridiculed ... we need to act immediately to restore its honour,” he said, adding such state of disarray in the party was like “ayam hilang ibu” (chicks who lost their mother).

"I will hold an inaugural committee meeting in the next two days and will visit party divisions and branches to empower the party.

"We have to act fast. The longer we let it go on, the more insults Umno will endure," he said when contacted here today.

Umno secretary-general Tan Sri Annuar Musa in a press statement today said that the deputy president who performs the duties of the party president, Datuk Mohamad Hasan, had agreed to Ahmad’s appointment.

Ahmad, who was the former Menteri Besar, replaced Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid and his apppointment was agreed by all division chiefs in Terengganu by consensus.

Ahmad said he was grateful to the party and all the state leadership who entrusted him with the responsibility.

"I want Umno to restore people’s faith in the party and ultimately gain their support," he said.

It was previously reported that Ahmad and seven Umno division chiefs in Terengganu had attended a meeting with Mohamad and Mahdzir in Kuala Lumpur.

Mahdzir previously held the post after BN lost to PAS in the 14th General Election (GE14).
